SA’s Prick of the Week – Congressional Republicans

July 30, 2011

Because there are republicans in both chambers of Congress, two awards are given this week. While Ordinary Americans are looking for their representatives in Congress to solve the problems that affect our everyday lives – problems like jobs, jobs and jobs (did I say jobs?), these self-serving partisan republicans in both chambers are driving the entire economy toward an abyss over the debt ceiling argument.

Since 1917, when the debt ceiling was first set at $7.5-billion, it has been routinely raised 102 times without much fanfare. Since 1982, when it hit $1-trillion, the ceiling has increased exponentially which shows what everyone agrees on… spending is out of control. The reason there is so much vitriol this time is that the republicans have taken the U.S. economy hostage and they’re threatening to destroy it unless their draconian spending cuts are made without increasing any revenue. Their idea of spending cuts focuses on the programs that are critical to average Americans – like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Cutting these programs will force less privileged citizens to pay a lot more for their retirement and healthcare, which amounts to a huge tax increase to those who can least afford it. At the same time republicans don’t want to close any loopholes or eliminate any tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and corporations. They don’t need them and can afford to pay more, but these wealthy entities fund the republicans’ election campaigns.

The Democrats in Congress, including the majority in the Senate and the Obama administration, have been impotent in explaining to the right-wing voting block how wrong-headed and stubborn the republicans are being on this issue and how dangerous this hostage situation is, not only for America, but for the global economy. Democrats know that we shouldn’t be wasting time negotiating with these hostage-takers… time that could be better spent trying to heal the economy. They have been sucked into this bloody fight because they want to protect our social programs and increase revenues by eliminating tax breaks and loopholes that allow the wealthy to pay lower taxes than the rest of us. While the Democrats in the Senate and White House started out on the high road, they (in the spirit of compromise) have given away the store. They have compromised so far that the two plans are now nearly identical. Now the republicans (who regard “compromise” as a dirty word) are still screaming “NO” because they want to only increase the debt ceiling for six months so that we will have to endure a repeat of this argument next January. The Democrats want the increase to carry us beyond the 2012 election.

So, the republicans deserve much more than just this Double-Golden Prick Award. They deserve to burn in hell for what they’re doing to the country as a whole and to every individual they are supposed to represent.
