The 29th Day

June 14, 2011

Those who deny the reality of climate change and global warming pilloried Al Gore when he tried to warn us of the impending catastrophe. I’m sure they hate Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute as well, because he also speaks the truth. I sat spellbound last night for an hour and a half as I watched him on “Journey to Planet Earth” on PBS. Anyone who cares about the planet on which we live and the welfare of future  generations needs to get their heads out of the sand and pay close attention to what Lester Brown has to say. I found the following clip from the show especially poignant. We are approaching a tipping point, beyond which civilization as we have known it will disintegrate. As the world’s population explodes, climatic changes are making it more and more difficult to feed the current population. We are in the 29th day now, and when we reach the 30th day it will be all over.

Any suggestions as to what we should do?

Yes. Learn all you can about the perils that are on the horizon. Become an activist. Get the word out. Protest the burning of fossil fuels and the use of corn for making ethanol to power automobiles. Support the rapid transition to clean, renewable energy sources. Encourage population reduction. It’s time to spay and neuter more than just our pets. There are 7 billion people in the world now and there will be 8 billion by 2025 unless people wise up. Climate change is already making it impossible to feed the current population.
