Stop The Black Friday Madness!

November 26, 2010

There is no way I would get anywhere near a mall or shopping center on Black Friday. The thought of fighting the traffic and crowds sends a shiver up my spine. This shopping day is an experiment in human psychology dreamed up by a group of sadistic capitalists who wanted to see how much shoppers will endure in order to get a bargain. Results show that they will endure quite a lot.

At 2:00 AM, when a normal person would be snuggled warmly in bed, these competitive shoppers are lined up in front of stores like cattle at the stockyard. Then, when the doors open, they become like sharks in a feeding frenzy, fighting off the other sharks for the chance to purchase a limited number of drastically reduced items. When their baskets are full they stand in checkout lines longer than a football field and charge it all on their credit cards that they will still be paying off next year on Black Friday.

A more logical and humane approach would be for the stores to just lower their prices for the entire holiday shopping season and eliminate the madness. They are obviously still making a profit on the reduced merchandise and the same number of shoppers will be buying holiday presents over the next month. There’s no need to cram it all into one insane day. If everybody got together and refused to participate in Black Friday, the stores would come around to my way of thinking. Try it next year. Force the sadists to cater to you on your time. Just pull the covers back over you and let visions of sugarplums dance in your head. Tomorrow is another day.

I agree, you won’t catch me out anywhere today.

I think it makes people into savages! Rats or something. It’s crazy. No thank you. I agree with you prices should be lowered throughout the entire holiday. Make things civilized. Don’t entice people to act like lunatics.

You’re right. Humans act like lunatics all the time. Black Friday just pours gasoline on that fire.
