Something Rotten in Society

August 21, 2010

We used to admire people of good moral fiber and sterling character like Winston Churchill, FDR or Mother Theresa – People of great accomplishments like Neil Armstrong, Thomas Edison or the Wright brothers. Oh, how things have changed.  Nowadays, a huge number of knuckle-dragging neanderthals are so starved for heroes to worship that they elevate the lowest of the low, the baddest of the bad, and the weirdest of the weird to superstar status. Some that come to mind are Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, vampires, Rush Limbaugh, and now a new breed of unlikely hero… the common criminal.

Recently, it was Colton Harris-Moore, dubbed the “Barefoot Bandit”. He escaped from a half-way home in April 2008 and went on a two-year-long, nationwide rampage breaking into homes and businesses, stealing cars and airplanes, and daring police to catch him. This arrogant 19-year-old twit is a criminal, not a hero! If there were any justice, this punk would be pilloried in the town square. But instead he has earned a Facebook following of 74,000 fans who egged him on, now mourn his arrest, and are collecting donations for his legal defense. His mother even encouraged him to “Run, Colton, run”. People are buying T-shirts that support his nefarious behavior. There is even a movie deal and a book proposal in the works.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s another one. Raoul Moat – a 37-year-old bouncer who served four months in prison for assaulting a 9-year-old. Upon his release he shot his ex-girlfriend and killed her new boyfriend. Then, in the largest manhunt in British history, Moat eluded police for six days. When he was finally cornered, he shot a police officer and then killed himself. An army of morons turned Moat into a martyr, a hero, and a legend. His Facebook page has tens of thousands of fans who leave fawning messages, like this one: AMEN TO OUR HERO MOAT – LEGEND AND TOP BLOKE – AMEN.

What is wrong with these people?!!! Are their lives so bereft of a sense of right and wrong that they can no longer tell the difference? Wrong is right. Down is up. I find all this unearned sensationalism morally reprehensible and I’m concerned for the future of society. How can a civilization whose citizenry glorifies such inglorious behavior possibly survive in the long term? It certainly sends the wrong message to our children: Hey, kid! If you want to be a famous hero, go out and commit some outrageous crimes.

The human race has indeed fallen down the rabbit hole.

let’s not forget those highly paid athletes who many employers wouldn’t hire because of their criminal background.

Thank you, Chuck. I had forgotten an entire segment of inglorious bastards. It is certainly an indictment of today’s society when there are no more real heroes – no one left who is WORTHY of a kid’s admiration.
