Will the World End on 12-21-2012?

August 18, 2010

Some people believe that the world will end on December 21, 2012 because the ancient Mayan calendar runs out on that day. It is said that the ancient Egyptians also saw 2012 as a year of great change. NASA predicts a sharp increase in the number of sunspots and solar flares for 2012, which could cause electrical failures and satellite disruptions and send the civilized world into chaos.

Christians who take the Bible literally will remind us that Jesus said:  Heaven and earth shall pass away… But of that day and hour knoweth no man…” TV evangelist Jack Van Impe, however, uses clues from the Bible to zero in on 12-21-2012 as the “end of the age”, while stressing that the world will never end.

There have been many failed doomsday predictions throughout history. Ten of them are outlined here:

As an amateur student of Bible prophecy (from a philosophical point of view) and of other supernatural phenomena, I pay close attention to what’s going on in this world. The evidence I see tells me that we are headed for some kind of unprecedented catastrophe in the near future.

The globe is warming. The land, water and air are polluted. Ice caps and glaciers are melting. The oceans are rising. Islands are disappearing. Wars are raging. We’re running out of oil and clean water. There’s not enough food to feed everyone yet the population is exploding. Mysterious, incurable new diseases are appearing. Beneficial species are going extinct at alarming rates while undesirable species are thriving. Terrorism infects every continent. The global financial system has collapsed. Greed, corruption and immorality are rampant. Jobs and money are scarce but prices keep rising. The middle-class has fallen into poverty.

Add to all that the dramatic increase in the number and severity of earthquakes, floods, droughts, hurricanes, tornados, tsuamis, wildfires, oil spills, volcanic activity, blizzards, etc.

It is now official that the first decade of the 21st century and the summer of 2010 have been the hottest on record. Nine nations have set new record temperatures this year, including Russia (111 deg. F), Niger (118), Saudi Arabia and Iraq (126), and Pakistan which set the all-time record for Asia at 130 degrees. And because hotter air can carry more moisture, Pakistan also experienced epic flooding this summer. A study from Canadian researchers has shown that warmer seawater has reduced phytoplankton, the base of the marine food chain, by 40% since 1950.

Until about 200 years ago, our atmosphere contained 275 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide. Scientists have determined that if we are to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, CO2 must be kept below 350 ppm. We are now at 392 ppm CO2 – and rising by about 2 ppm every year.

It seems that the planet and human society are coming apart at the seams. There is a sense that modern civilization may have run its course. It’s like humans have become a virus upon the planet and mother nature is trying to eliminate the disease. These anxieties are widely shared by the thoughtful minority among us who know beyond any doubt that something serious is going on. Meanwhile, republicans still decry that global warming is a hoax and refuse to support any legislation that attempts to do something about it.

Most people seem oblivious to the signs of impending doom and scoff at the very notion. Younger people have never experienced anything else, so they don’t know that life used to be so much better. It is not important for humans to know the day, the hour or the method of the end. What is important is for everyone to realize that our planet is suffering, human civilization is on the decline, and that we must do whatever we can to avert a disastrous outcome.

But humans are too arogant, narrow-minded and self-serving to do what is necessary, so it may already be too late. They would have to stop fighting each other and work together to defeat this common enemy. They will have to stop polluting and transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible. They will have to get deadly-serious about decreasing the population. They will have to embrace the ideals of a lean, clean, and green way of living. Politicians of both parites will have to divorce themselves completely from the special interest groups that steer legislation in the wrong direction.

Nature’s bounty is not infinite. The horn-of-plenty is now nearly an empty horn. If man continues on his present course (as conservatives would have us do), the end WILL come in the not-too-distant future. Maybe the Mayans were right and the end will come on 12-21-12… just in time for Christmas.

If there are survivors, they will probably be living in self-contained,climate controlled dome cities – insulated from the toxic atmosphere and seered earth that they and their forebearers created out of their greed and ignorance.
